PIITB By JD- Mets Updates   After weeks with absolutely nothing, we finally have a little news coming from the Mets. With all of free agency stalled, we have not seen much movement from anyone, but the Mets have made a couple moves recently.   Mets bring back Adam Ottavino on a 1 year, 4.5 million dollar contract. This is not the sexiest move, as Otto has been a Met the last couple years and struggled last year. If you recall, Otto declined his 6.5 million player option hoping for more money on the open market, but ended up back with the Mets for less. Otto’s walks were up and strikeouts were down last year, but was effective in low leverage situations. When he loses control of that ever changing slider, it is scary to watch him go out there. However, this move is a good depth one.   It was reported today that the Mets expect to sign left-hander, Jake Diekman. Diekman is a hard throwing lefty that owns a career 3.82 era and is coming off a 3.21 FIP with the White S...

PIITB by JD Mets Updates   We have news this week     The Mets inked Sean Manaea to a 2 year, 28 million dollar deal. This deal includes an opt out after the 2024 season.    Manaea was once a highly touted prospect, so his expectations have been higher than the reality. Manaea does have some upside to be an above average starter. He pitched to a 4.44 era last year in 34 appearances. He was in an out of the pen, but finished the year in the rotation and performed well, pitching to a sub 4 era in that stretch.    I am not thrilled with this move, but it is one I expected the Mets could make. The Mets need another starter, and I am not sure they will go sign one with the intention of inserting him in the rotation to start the year.   If so the rotation would be: Senga Quintana Severino Manaea Houser   That is a weak rotation with the potential to be average. If this is the rotation, I expect Stearns to build the bullpen a bit more.   What’s...

PIITB By JD- Mets Updates   Happy New Year to all! While we are in the new year, MLB Free Agency is still at a virtual standstill. It appears to me that teams don’t want the players on the market. They are hoping their price will drop and you can get deals.    The Mets made a move today, inking former Yankee, Harrison Bader to a 1 year, 10.5 Million dollar contract.    Bader is an excellent defender out in Center Field and Baseball Savant loves him. He is in the 93 rd  percentile in fielding run value with 9 OAA and ranks in the 85 th  percentile in sprint speed. Bader has trouble staying on the field with a slew of injuries recently.    His offense is generally subpar with a career 706 OPS. However, he has a 936 OPS and a 153 WRC+ vs lefties in 2023. That is an excellent boost and much needed considering the Mets as a team had a 708 OPS vs lefties. That is an unacceptable number and this will help that.   This move means that Nim...

PIITB By JD- Mets Updates   We have some news this week! Nothing major, but David Stearns made a couple savy moves.    12/18: Acquired Yohan Ramirez from the White Sox for cash   Stats:  Ramirez pitched to a 4.23 ERA last year with a 107 era+. While that may not look pretty at face value, the Mets believe they may have found something to tweak. He has some elite Savant rankings and not some not-so-good ones. He has elite extension, GB%, Hard hit%, and barrel%. These stats point to an ability to get outs. The Mets have to limit his walks. He is a low risk piece that took nothing to get.   12/20: Mets acquired RHP Adrian Houser and CF Tyrone Taylor for RHP Coleman Crow   Coleman Crow: Crow (22) was acquired from the Angels for Eduardo Escobar at the trade deadline this season. Crow has some upside and had success this season in just 4 starts. He pitched to a 1.88 Era in 28 innings. His minor league career era is 4.33. While I did like Crow, this w...

Mets Updates- PIITB By JD   The Mets have made a flurry of moves (many minor league) the last couple weeks. None overly notable, but as we have been told this whole offseason, the direction it heads revolves around Yoshinobu Yamamoto.    In terms of major league signings, the Mets signed  Jorge Lopez  to a one year contract. Lopez was an All Star is 2022, pitching to a 2.53 era across 71 innings. He struggled mightily in 2023, pitching to a 5.95 era across 59 innings. Stearns is taking flyers on these types of players to fill out a team. Lopez will have to prove himself to earn innings on this team. He provides a lot of upside.    The Mets also signed,  Michael Tonkin  to a one-year 1 million dollar deal. Tonkin is another flyer. I am not quite sure what the Mets see in Tonkin. He pitched to a 4.28 era this year after not being in the league since 2017. His underlying metrics do not suggest improvement is coming either for the 34 year ...

Mets Updates for the week   Things have gotten started in Mets land with the first couple signings of the David Stearns era. In addition to that the Mets hired a head of business operations. Let’s discuss    New head of Business Operations: Scott Havens.   Scott Havens is now the former CEO of Bloomberg Media. He left his job to come be the Mets head of business operations. This is an incredible move by Steve Cohen. Scott brings experience and knowledge of how to grow a business. Steve is treating the Mets like a business and I am all for it.    His role: Scott’s role will entail everything that is not baseball-related. Including but not limited to legal operations and non-baseball finances. I am sure we will learn more about his role soon.   Now for the fun part.   Stearns signed Luis Severino to a 1 year 13 million dollar contract this week. I know the reaction on twitter been mostly negative, however, I believe this signing has low risk ...

Mets updates  The Mets have filled up most of the roles in the coaching staff this week. There are a few more guys staying than I would have predicted. However, I have faith in David Stearns.    Manager: Carlos Mendoza Bench coach: John Gibbons. Gibbons was actually drafted by the Mets back in 1980. He was a promising catching prospect but was derailed by an early injury. He managed the blue Jays in two separate stints spanning a total of 11 years. He was a coach prior to that for the Blue Jays and Royals. He is highly qualified and by all metrics a good hire. Hitting coach: Eric Chavez (returning to his 2022 role) Chavez was clearly good for the 2022 Mets let’s hope that shows itself in 2024. Co-hitting coach: Jeremy Barnes. I am very surprised Barnes is still around after 2023. He is being called a co hitting coach instead of assistant. This is essentially his 2022 role as well. Pitching coach: Jeremy Hefner. No surprise here, everyone loves Hefner. First base/ou...
